A happy marriage is not an accident but it is a result of hard work, sacrifice and a lot of forgiving one another. Like any permanent structure, it has to be founded upon a very strong foundation.
Pillars are there to support the building so below are the 3 basic pillars that support the marriage institute:
1. Trust - When you have trust for your spouse it means that you can rely or depend on that person. Trust is not a miracle but a character trait that is built and earned in a process called time. It does not happen in an instant.
The foundation of trust is openness or transparency. Transparency is having nothing to hide to your spouse. The Word teaches us that both Adam and Eve were naked but not ashamed (Gen 2:25, Isaiah 58:7). It means they had nothing to hide from each other.
Your level of trust reveals how much you are committed to make your marriage work. Hiding things to your spouse causes more harm than good. Its important to know that a wound heals better when uncovered.
If trust has been lost in your marriage start opening up to your spouse. Earn your spouse’s trust by being transparent. Remember the earliest you can start is today, in fact right now.
2. Truth - Truth is when you give the right and uncompromised information to your spouse. Always avoid speaking in parables and telling half-truths because when a truth is compromised by a lie, the truth suffers.
Husbands must have true information about their wives. This means the husband must know his wife’s shoe size, birthday, favorite food, hobbies. This knowledge can only be attained by asking your wife. You do not need to prophesy about this but simply ask your wife.
The wife must have the truth that her husband needs respect from her always. Again it is very important to ask your man how he expects to be respected.
3. Love - Please understand this: -Love in marriage is more than a feeling or emotion but a choice. Emotions are like weather in that they change so it is very dangerous to rely on them. Love because it is the right thing to do.
Love yourself so that you can love your spouse. You cannot give what you do not have. If you love your spouse, you have proven that you love yourself. Learn to communicate your love by expressing it. Love needs expression
